Our editorial method

Clear claims.
Visible evidence.

You should be able to follow our thinking—and see where the evidence stops.

A convincing presentation is not the same as a confirmed outcome. A company’s statement is not an independent test. And an interpretation, however useful, is still an interpretation.

Research and deep-dive pages use five labels to make those distinctions visible. They describe the basis for a specific claim, rather than assigning a blanket truth score to a story.

Depth that fits the episode

Every episode can have a concise summary and key takeaways. Editorial breakdowns add explanation. Research and deep dives add a detailed evidence trail when the subject calls for it. A short episode page is not required to carry a full research dossier.

✓ Verified

Checked against identified evidence. The scope of the check matters.

◉ Demonstrated

Observable in a specific demonstration. Conditions and limits stay attached.

↗ Reported

Attributed to a company, publication, or tester. We name the source.

≈ Analysis

Our interpretation of the evidence. An inference is not a company’s stated intent.

? Unresolved

An open question that the available evidence does not settle.

Keep the scope attached

We can verify that a company made a statement without verifying that its product behaves as described. We can observe an assistant say it completed a task without seeing the completed task. Those are separate claims.

Make the source trail useful

References identify the publisher, the material being cited, and the relevant section or timestamp. Where a source is a company announcement, a demonstration, or someone’s reported experience, we say so.

Illustrations and manufacturer imagery are identified as such. Neither is presented as evidence of a MerchSalon hands-on test.

Explain the interpretation

Analysis connects the evidence to a useful question: what might this mean for your choices? It should not silently become a product claim or an assertion about someone’s motives.

Leave room for a better answer

Open questions stay visible. When evidence changes a material conclusion, the story should identify the change and its date. Corrections should clarify what changed rather than erase the trail.
